Museum

The Alprose chocolate museum presents the world of chocolate from the origins to this day. From historical aspects and individual developments to the first production plants and today’s varieties, it encompasses all aspects of this vital, basic food product. Apart from its didactic importance, the museum also highlights the tradition of Swiss chocolate making which is known for its excellence worldwide.

A little bit of history

The very first mention of cocoa was made by the Olmecs, taking us far back to 1000 B.C. We know, without a shadow of doubt, that the Mayas were the very first to savour all the precious qualities of chocolate around 600 A.D. The Aztecs wasted no time in following suit. And then thanks to Christopher Columbus, chocolate was enjoyed in Europe, conquering Italy first and after a short while France too.

Noble Origins

Cocoa (theobroma cocoa) is a member of the sterculiaceae plants. With its special need for warmth and humidity, this plant flourishes exclusively in only a few tropical countries that offer the perfect climatic conditions, allowing it to reach a maximum height of 4-15c.m.; Brazil, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Malaysia and Nigeria.

Production process

Following a special walkway all our visitors are invited to participate in a unique and exciting experience by observing all the phases of production from the creamy liquid to the solid forms. Immersed in the pungent aromas you are also enticed to make a stop at our on-site shop.
